Hand Lettering Maker Day
On April 5th 2016, Our Humber College Graphic Design for Print & Web program hosted our very first Maker Day. The day was hosted by Leslie Harrod from LigaturesYYZ who facilitated our students in the art of hand lettering. Our students study typography within the first section of our program and we decided to dedicate a day to construct letter forms and acquire some practical skills in hand lettering along the way. Many of our students were not familiar with the tools and techniques of hand lettering. However, after familiarizing themselves with Tombow Brush Markers and creating various line weights, curves and letter forms, they were off and running to create characters, numerals and glyphs. By the end of the day, students were asked to create a hand lettered quote of their choice.
I really enjoyed this workshop because it was the first time in a while I got to actually slow down my writing… It was also quite therapeutic too!

Overall, the day was enriched with Leslie’s energy and passion for hand lettering. We broke out of our usually computer lab for the day and settled into one of the Hive Rooms at Humber College’s North Campus. The Hives are excellent spaces for social and constructive collaborative learning. Students shared ideas and techniques throughout the day and got a chance to create something more tactile than what they usually create on screen.
I Had a blast at the hand lettering workshop!…The entire experience was very relaxing and grounding.
